First Aid Kits for Horses

Horse First AidWe all know having a First Aid Kit for our horse is important. But what should it consist of?

I recommend having a kit that is easily transportable. That way you can bring it with you on a trailer if you leave the barn for a show, trail ride, etc.

You can get a small plastic lockable toolbox from Walmart for around $10 for this purpose. I like the ones with a removable tray. The tray can hold your thermometer and other small items.

Now, the items. Here is the basic list that all Equine First Aid kits should have:

  • Thermometer
  • Gauze Pads
  • Gauze Roll
  • Non Adherent Dressing
  • Cotton Roll
  • Blunt Nosed Scissors
  • Vaseline (lubricant for thermometer etc.)
  • Instant Ice Pack
  • Iodine/Betadine Solution
  • Antiseptic Ointment
  • Vet Wrap
  • Diapers (to absorb bad wounds, can be used as a bandage under vetwrap or bandage wraps)
  • Zip Lock bags
  • Wire Cutters
  • Gloves
  • Bucket

If you want to get a little more advanced I recommend having these items too:

  • Stethescope
  • Cotton Leg Wraps (2)
  • Cotton Bandage Wraps (2)
  • Pressurize Saline Solution
  • Bute
  • Ace
  • Epsom Salt
  • Hoof Boot for Soaking
  • Clean Towels
  • Blood Stop

If you have your own favorite items, feel free to include those too! Just remember to get a toolbox fitted for carrying all the items you want to include. Also, feel free to shop at the Dollar Store and Walmart or your other favorite Human Store for some of these items. It will help with the cost.
